Frequently Asked Questions

1. Are there adults-only resorts in the Maldives?

Yes, the Maldives has a few official adults-only resorts, and more will be adult-focused with adult-only areas on the island. Some options include Komandoo Maldives, Baros Maldives, and Centara Ras Fushi. These resorts typically offer a more tranquil atmosphere, romantic experiences, and activities tailored to adults.

2. What is the best time to visit the Maldives?

The best time is from November to April when the weather is dry and sunny. However, this is also peak season, so expect higher prices.

The off-season (May to October) has lower rates but a higher chance of rain. We went the last week of April and dipped into May and only had a few rain showers during the day that didn’t last very long.

3. How much does a Maldives trip cost?

It varies widely. Budget travelers can spend around $1,500 for a week on a local island, while luxury travelers may spend $10,000+ for an all-inclusive overwater villa experience.

4. Can I visit the Maldives on a budget?

Yes! Staying on local islands like Maafushi or Thoddoo, using public ferries, and eating at local restaurants can significantly reduce costs. My favorite way to save money is using points and miles! Several resorts are available to book with points, and you can also book your international flights with miles.

5. Do I need travel insurance for the Maldives?

Itโ€™s highly recommended, especially since medical facilities are limited outside Malรฉ, and seaplane transfers can be costly if rescheduled due to weather. I recommend Allianz Travel Insurance.

6. Can you drink alcohol in the Maldives?

Yes, but only at resorts, liveaboard boats, and private islands licensed to serve alcohol. Alcohol is strictly prohibited on local islands and cannot be purchased in Malรฉ or brought into the country.

Resorts typically have a wide selection of alcoholic beverages, including wine, cocktails, and champagne, but keep in mind alcohol can be expensive if not included in your meal plan or all-inclusive package.

7. Are all resorts in the Maldives all-inclusive?

No, but many offer all-inclusive packages. Some include half board and full board options, while others cover drinks, excursions, and premium dining. Check the fine print before booking your stay. Some resorts will also include seaplane or speedboat transfers with their packages, so be on the lookout for this!

8. What voltage and currency is used in the Maldives?

The Maldives operates on a 230V supply voltage. Many of the resorts use the same power sockets as the UK, which is a type G plug. However, it’s always a good idea to check with your hotel! If you’re from the US, the adaptor I purchased for my trip can be found here on Amazon!

The Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) is the local currency, but US dollars are widely accepted at resorts and for major transactions. Most resorts are cashless and charge everything to your room.

Getting to the Maldives

If you are from the US, the Maldives is a long-haul destination with up to 30 hours of travel! Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malรฉ serves as the main entry point, and most visitors arrive via major hubs like Dubai (DXB), Doha (DOH), or Singapore (SIN).

If you have points or miles, airlines like Qatar Airways, Emirates, and Singapore Airlines offer great redemption options in business and first class. Booking flights early and taking advantage of airline reward programs can make the long journey much more comfortable.

Arriving in the Maldives

Once you land in Malรฉ, youโ€™ll go through immigration, which is typically a smooth process for tourists. The Maldives offers visa-free entry for many nationalities for up to 30 days, but youโ€™ll need proof of onward travel and a hotel reservation. After clearing customs, youโ€™ll find yourself in the airportโ€™s small but efficient arrivals area, where resort representatives will be waiting to assist you with the next leg of your journey.

Transportation to your Hotel

Getting from Malรฉ to your resort depends on its location. Resorts near Malรฉ can be reached by speedboat, which usually takes 30-45 minutes.

More remote islands require a seaplane transfer, which is an experience in itself, offering breathtaking aerial views of the atolls. Seaplanes are operated by Trans Maldivian Airways and generally cost between $300-$600 per person round-trip. Even though this is a more expensive route, I would highly recommend you select a resort that offers this!

Some resorts, particularly those further south, require a domestic flight followed by a boat transfer. Be sure to check your resortโ€™s transfer policies and budget accordingly.

Where to Stay

Choosing the right resort is key when planning a trip to the Maldives. The country has nearly 1,200 islands, with many resorts occupying their own private island.

Accommodation options range from budget-friendly guesthouses on local islands to ultra-luxurious overwater villas with private pools.

If youโ€™re looking for a mix of comfort and value, resorts like Sun Siyam Iru Fushi or Meeru Island Resort are great choices. For a more high-end experience, consider properties like the St. Regis Maldives, Soneva Fushi, or Seaside Finolhu.

Decide on your must-have amenities, and this will help you narrow down your options. An overwater bungalow, all-inclusive dining and drinks, an in-room pool, or a seaplane transfer could all be things you consider before booking a hotel.

Where You Can Use Points

Using points can significantly cut down the cost of your Maldives trip. Marriott Bonvoy, Hilton Honors, and World of Hyatt all have properties in the Maldives where you can redeem points for free nights.

For example, the St. Regis Maldives and the Ritz-Carlton Maldives are excellent options for Marriott points, while the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island is a top Hilton pick. If you have Chase Ultimate Rewards, transferring them to Hyatt for a stay at the Park Hyatt Maldives can be a great value.

Some resorts also allow you to use points for extras like room upgrades or dining credits, making your luxury vacation even more affordable.

Activities

The Maldives is a paradise for water lovers. Snorkeling, scuba diving, jetskiing, and deep-sea fishing are the top Maldives excursions offering vibrant coral reefs and abundant marine life, including manta rays, turtles, and whale sharks.

We stayed at Seaside Finolhu, and they had a daily snorkeling activity to their house reef. This was included in our stay and we could do it every day! They also had non-motorised water sports like kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding available free of charge. It’s always good to check with your hotel to see what’s included!

If you prefer a more relaxed experience, indulge in a spa treatment overlooking the ocean, sunset dolphin cruise, or enjoy a private beach dinner. Whether youโ€™re seeking adventure or relaxation, thereโ€™s something for everyone in the Maldives.

Final Thoughts

Planning a trip to the Maldives takes careful consideration, from selecting the right resort and transportation to maximizing points and choosing activities. While the Maldives is known for its luxury, there are ways to make the trip more affordable, especially by using points and miles for flights and hotels.

No matter your budget, the stunning scenery, warm hospitality, and once-in-a-lifetime experiences make the Maldives a dream destination worth visiting.
