Akumal Beach Location
Akumal Beach is located on Mexico’s Riviera Maya, about 25 minutes south of Playa del Carmen and roughly 20 minutes north of Tulum. If you are flying into Cancun (CUN), it will take roughly 60-70 minutes depending on traffic.
There is a main public beach area where most snorkeling tours operate, along with nearby parking, restrooms, and beach clubs. If you are staying at a beachfront resort, like Secrets Akumal, you can snorkel right from the resort’s shoreline and see turtles without needing to go into town.
Why visit Akumal Beach?

Akumal means “Place of the Turtles” in Mayan, and it lives up to its name. The bay is a protected area with seagrass beds that attract green sea turtles year-round. Because the water is shallow and usually calm, visibility is often excellent.
Akumal is also more relaxed than nearby tourist hubs, like Cancun. It feels quieter and less commercial than Playa del Carmen, which makes it a great choice if you want a laid-back beach day paired with incredible snorkeling.

Akumal Turtles
Akumal is home primarily to green turtles, with occasional sightings of Loggerhead and Hawksbill turtles. These turtles are protected under Mexican law, and Akumal Bay has strict rules in place to keep them safe.
You are not allowed to touch, feed, or chase the turtles. Snorkelers must keep a respectful distance and avoid standing on or damaging the seagrass, which is their main food source. Akumal’s seagrass beds are one of the main reasons turtles stay here year-round.
These protections help ensure that future visitors can continue to experience snorkeling with turtles in a responsible way.

Where to Snorkel in Akumal
Akumal is not just one beach. It is made up of several small coves and bays along the coastline, each offering a slightly different snorkeling experience.
Akumal Bay, Jade Bay, and Aventuras Akumal are all close to the main public beach, and this is where the best snorkeling in Akumal typically happens. The seagrass beds here attract green sea turtles year-round, and visibility is often excellent.
Akumal Bay is also the central hub of the area. Within a short walk of the beach, you will find restaurants, small shops, and local artisans selling handmade goods, which makes it an easy place to spend a few hours.
North of Akumal, you will find Half Moon Bay and Yal-Kú Lagoon. Half Moon Bay is quieter and less crowded, while Yal-Kú Lagoon is a mix of fresh and salt water with calm conditions and colorful fish, making it a great option if you are staying north of Akumal.
Snorkel Tours

While it is possible to snorkel on your own at Akumal Beach, booking a guided snorkel tour comes with several important benefits. Local tours are very inexpensive, and they follow the rules that help keep the turtles and seagrass safe. Having a guide ensures you are snorkeling responsibly while still getting the best possible experience.
Guides know exactly where the turtles are feeding and how to spot them without disturbing their natural behavior. This saves you time and increases your chances of seeing turtles up close, especially if you are visiting for the first time or have limited time. Tours also include required safety equipment including life jackets, which are mandatory in certain areas of the bay.
When I stayed at Secrets Akumal, we found Juan Quijada right on the beach, and we booked a snorkel tour with him. His tours are simple, well-organized, and focused on giving you the best possible chance of seeing turtles while following all local protection rules. He even offers a turtle guarantee on all his tours! If you do not see any turtles during the tour, you do not pay.
For our group of 8, the cost was $40 USD per person and included everything you need for a one-hour guided snorkel, including a mask, snorkel, life jacket, pictures and videos, and an experienced guide who knows exactly where the turtles are feeding. You can reach out to him directly through Facebook Messenger. If you are staying at Secrets Akumal, it is a great way to spend an hour of your day!
Akumal Cenotes
Akumal is known first for its sea turtles, but many people do not realize that hundreds of cenotes also surround this area. Cenotes are natural sinkholes formed when limestone collapses, revealing underground freshwater pools. For the ancient Maya, cenotes were sacred places and served as an essential source of fresh water, as well as important ceremonial sites.
The cenotes around Akumal are part of one of the largest underground river systems in the world. Today, they offer a completely different experience from ocean snorkeling, with crystal-clear freshwater, dramatic rock formations, and peaceful jungle settings. Visiting a cenote is a great way to balance beach time with something unique to the area.
Many cenotes are open for swimming, snorkeling, or diving, and can be reached in under 30 minutes! Popular cenotes near Akumal Beach include:
Cenote Yal-Kú – It is a calm lagoon-style cenote that is great for beginners.
Cenote Mariposa – Closer to Tulum, this cenote is known for its crystal-clear water and impressive rock formations. You will see tours here combined with the Tulum ruins.
Cenote Santa Cruz – Close to Akumal Beach and features a rope swing and jumping platforms.
If you prefer a guided experience, many cenote tours combine snorkeling, swimming, and even cave exploration. These tours often include transportation, equipment, and a guide, making them an easy add-on to your Akumal vacation!
